About this part

422-1144 is supplied as a remanufactured replacement injector. Cross-reference numbers: 422-1144, 20R-4180. Application recorded for this part: Fits Caterpillar — CAT 422-1144 20R-4180 3606 3608 3612 3616. The injector sits at the end of the rail and does the final metering work: it receives fuel already at high pressure and decides both how much enters the cylinder and how well atomised it is. That combination governs power, smoke and fuel consumption more directly than almost any other part on the engine. Common indicators are rough or unstable idle, smoke that was not there before, higher fuel consumption on the same duty cycle, diesel knock under load, and in some cases fuel dilution of the engine oil from an injector that is leaking internally. Because those symptoms also point to compression, turbocharger or air-side problems, it is worth confirming before ordering. A return-flow (back-leakage) test across all injectors and a cylinder cut-out test will usually identify both whether the fault is injector-related and which cylinder is responsible. Fitment notes: injectors on the same engine wear together. Replacing only the failed unit often leaves the others close behind, and a single new injector reading differently from its neighbours will cause exactly the rough running you were trying to fix. Replacing as a matched set avoids that. Always fit new copper sealing washers and seals — used washers rarely seal a second time — and where the system requires injector classification or IQA codes, have them programmed to the ECU after fitting. Our rebuild standard: strip to components, clean, measure against wear limits, replace what is worn, machine back to specification where required, then calibrate and bench-test every unit. Delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage are recorded, and units outside specification are not dispatched. Test sheets available on request, and every unit carries a 12-month warranty.
