An injector is a high-speed valve. It has to hold back rail pressure, then open and close within a fraction of a crankshaft degree — several times per cycle on pilot-injection engines. Anything that alters opening behaviour, whether it is carbon on the tip, a worn needle or a tired solenoid, changes how the cylinder burns its charge. Watch for hard hot starting, uneven idle, visible smoke, a misfire that clears when the engine is revved, and consumption creeping up without any change in operating conditions. Before replacing anything, distinguish injector faults from their look-alikes. Comparing return volume between cylinders and running a cut-out test on a diagnostic tool will show which cylinder is actually contributing — cheap checks that prevent replacing parts that were not faulty. Fitment notes: injectors on the same engine wear together.
