Fuel is delivered to this injector already pressurised by the rail. What it contributes is timing and atomisation — opening and closing within milliseconds, several times per combustion event on modern engines. Small changes in spray pattern or opening behaviour show up quickly as noise, smoke and rising consumption. Typical signs are poor starting hot or cold depending on whether the unit is weeping or sticking, an idle that hunts or sounds uneven, smoke under acceleration, and sometimes a smell of diesel in the oil where an injector is leaking internally. Because those symptoms also point to compression, turbocharger or air-side problems, it is worth confirming before ordering. A return-flow (back-leakage) test across all injectors and a cylinder cut-out test will usually identify both whether the fault is injector-related and which cylinder is responsible.
