Failures tend to progress gradually — a little more smoke, slightly harder starting when hot, slowly rising consumption — which is why they are often attributed to the injectors before the pump is checked. Symptoms associated with pump wear include hard starting when hot, loss of power, unstable idle, excess smoke, timing that will not hold, and in some cases diesel getting into the lubricating oil via a leaking drive shaft seal. Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear. Plenty of pumps get replaced for a blocked filter or a suction leak that costs a fraction to put right. Installation notes: never rotate the pump by force to align it — bar the engine over instead. Prime before cranking, renew the drive seal, confirm supply pressure, and bleed the system properly. Dry running for even a few seconds is the most common cause of premature failure on an otherwise sound pump. How we build it: the unit is fully disassembled, cleaned and measured, not simply resealed. Wear items — seals, springs, and where clearance is out of specification the plunger and barrel or nozzle assemblies — are replaced rather than reused. Sealing faces and bores are re-machined back to original clearances, then the unit is calibrated and run on a bench with delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage recorded.
