Failures tend to progress gradually — a little more smoke, slightly harder starting when hot, slowly rising consumption — which is why they are often attributed to the injectors before the pump is checked. Look for extended cranking, especially hot, poor throttle response, smoke across the rev range, fluctuating idle speed, and a gradual rise in consumption that cannot be explained by duty cycle. Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear.
