It has to hold back rail pressure, then open and close within a fraction of a crankshaft degree — several times per cycle on pilot-injection engines. Anything that alters opening behaviour, whether it is carbon on the tip, a worn needle or a tired solenoid, changes how the cylinder burns its charge. Symptoms that point to injector wear include hard starting when hot, rough idle, white smoke at start-up or black smoke under load, a sharp knocking from one cylinder, increased fuel consumption and a gradual loss of power. Because those symptoms also point to compression, turbocharger or air-side problems, it is worth confirming before ordering. A return-flow (back-leakage) test across all injectors and a cylinder cut-out test will usually identify both whether the fault is injector-related and which cylinder is responsible. Fitting notes: replace as a set rather than singly. A lone new injector will deliver differently from the worn ones around it, which usually reproduces the rough running. Use new sealing washers every time, clean the injector bore and seat carefully, and check whether your engine management expects classification codes to be entered after installation.
