What it contributes is timing and atomisation — opening and closing within milliseconds, several times per combustion event on modern engines. Small changes in spray pattern or opening behaviour show up quickly as noise, smoke and rising consumption. Common indicators are rough or unstable idle, smoke that was not there before, higher fuel consumption on the same duty cycle, diesel knock under load, and in some cases fuel dilution of the engine oil from an injector that is leaking internally. Do a return-flow check before buying anything. Comparing leak-off volumes between cylinders takes minutes, and if one injector returns far more than its neighbours, that single test has answered the question.
