The injection pump is what generates injection pressure and meters fuel to each cylinder in firing order. Because it also provides the timing reference, its condition affects starting, smoke, power and fuel consumption together — a pump that is worn rarely produces a single isolated symptom. Expect extended cranking especially when hot, hesitant throttle response, smoke that persists rather than clears, timing that drifts or will not hold, and in some cases fuel in the sump or a pump body running unusually hot. Diagnose the supply side before blaming the pump. Restricted filters, a tired lift pump or air being drawn into the suction line will produce symptoms almost identical to internal pump wear, and are far cheaper to resolve. Fitting notes: timing is everything here. Set the pump against the engine's timing marks rather than forcing anything, prime thoroughly before cranking, and check that the lift pump is delivering adequate supply pressure. Also replace the mounting seal and confirm there is no air left in the system before the first start. How we build it: the unit is fully disassembled, cleaned and measured, not simply resealed. Wear items — seals, springs, and where clearance is out of specification the plunger and barrel or nozzle assemblies — are replaced rather than reused. Sealing faces and bores are re-machined back to original clearances, then the unit is calibrated and run on a bench with delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage recorded.
