Failures tend to progress gradually — a little more smoke, slightly harder starting when hot, slowly rising consumption — which is why they are often attributed to the injectors before the pump is checked. Typical indicators are progressively harder starting, particularly when hot, reduced power, smoke under load, erratic idle, and fuel dilution in the sump — the last one should always be investigated immediately. Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear. Plenty of pumps get replaced for a blocked filter or a suction leak that costs a fraction to put right. Set timing to the engine’s marks and never lever the pump into place — bar the engine over instead. Prime thoroughly, use a new mounting seal, verify lift pump supply pressure, and bleed before starting. A dry start is the fastest way to ruin a sound pump. Our rebuild standard: strip to components, clean, measure against wear limits, replace what is worn, machine back to specification where required, then calibrate and bench-test every unit. Delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage are recorded, and units outside specification are not dispatched. Test sheets available on request, and every unit carries a 12-month warranty.
