This pump has two jobs that are easy to conflate: raising fuel to injection pressure, and metering the correct quantity at the correct moment. Wear affects both. The pattern is normally cumulative: slightly harder starting, then noticeable power loss, then smoke and unstable idle. Where the drive seal has failed, diesel in the lubricating oil is the warning that should stop you running the engine.
