The injector sits at the end of the rail and does the final metering work: it receives fuel already at high pressure and decides both how much enters the cylinder and how well atomised it is. That combination governs power, smoke and fuel consumption more directly than almost any other part on the engine. Typical signs are poor starting hot or cold depending on whether the unit is weeping or sticking, an idle that hunts or sounds uneven, smoke under acceleration, and sometimes a smell of diesel in the oil where an injector is leaking internally. It costs little to confirm the diagnosis first. Compare return flow between cylinders and cut each injector in turn on a scan tool; if one cylinder makes no difference to running quality, that is your culprit. Installation notes: new copper washers and seals are mandatory, the seat must be clean and undamaged, and the retainers should be torqued to the engine manufacturer's specification. If the ECU stores injector codes for this engine, program them after fitting, otherwise the engine will not compensate correctly. How we build it: the unit is fully disassembled, cleaned and measured, not simply resealed. Wear items — seals, springs, and where clearance is out of specification the plunger and barrel or nozzle assemblies — are replaced rather than reused. Sealing faces and bores are re-machined back to original clearances, then the unit is calibrated and run on a bench with delivery, return flow, opening pressure and leakage recorded.
