Every injection event depends on this pump producing pressure at exactly the right moment. Because it also carries its own lubrication, poor supply pressure and fuel dilution do disproportionate damage — which is why the supply side should always be checked alongside the pump itself.
The pattern is normally cumulative: slightly harder starting, then noticeable power loss, then smoke and unstable idle. Where the drive seal has failed, diesel in the lubricating oil is the warning that should stop you running the engine.
Check supply pressure at the pump inlet and look for air in the clear line before assuming internal wear. Plenty of pumps get replaced for a blocked filter or a suction leak that costs a fraction to put right.
Fitting notes: timing is everything here. Set the pump against the engine's timing marks rather than forcing anything, prime thoroughly before cranking, and check that the lift pump is delivering adequate supply pressure.
