Modern common rail injectors are manufactured to tolerances that are extremely tight but not zero. Rather than making every injector identical, several manufacturers measure each unit's actual flow behaviour at the factory and print a classification code on it. The engine control unit reads that code and compensates for the small differences between injectors.
The systems are known by various names depending on manufacturer — IQA codes, C2i, C3i, or simply injector classification or trim codes — but the principle is the same: the ECU is told how this specific injector behaves, cylinder by cylinder, and adjusts its pulse width accordingly.
Where this catches people out is on replacement. If the engine management stores codes for each cylinder, fitting a new injector without entering its code leaves the ECU compensating for a part that is no longer there. The engine will usually run — this is rarely a no-start — but it will not run as it should. Typical results are slightly rough idle, a small imbalance between cylinders, marginally higher consumption, and in some cases elevated emissions or a fault code for cylinder imbalance.
The converse also matters: if the engine does not use coding, entering codes is simply not applicable, and there is nothing to do beyond fitting the injectors correctly. There is no universal rule — it depends on the engine and its management system, which is why the question is worth asking before ordering rather than after fitting.
Practically, the sequence is: read the code off each new injector before fitting and note which cylinder each one goes into; fit the injectors with new sealing washers and correct torque; then enter the codes into the ECU through a diagnostic tool, matching each code to the cylinder it was fitted to. Getting the order wrong is a real risk, and swapping two codes produces the same imbalance you were trying to correct.
If you do not have access to a tool capable of writing the codes, most workshops and mobile diesel specialists can do it quickly, and it is worth arranging at the same time as the fitting rather than as a follow-up. Some engines will adapt over time, but relying on adaptation rather than entering the correct code from the start is a compromise.
For buyers: if your engine uses coding, ask whether the supplier can supply the code with the injector. A remanufactured unit that has been properly calibrated on a bench will have a code generated for it; a part supplied without one may simply have been cleaned.
